A. Well that depends on what you mean by "good" are you a bigger fan of Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Louis Prima, or Benny Goodman? I'll assume that you're probably into "Neo-Swing", which is modern pop swing like Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Here's a list of some neo-swing bands and songs: (band name - song name) Bellvue Cadillac - Call of the Wild Bellvue Cadillac - Pay Pay Pay Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Go Daddy-O Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Jumpin' Jack Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Mr. Pinstripe Suit Brian Setzer Orchestra - Americano Brian Setzer Orchestra - Pennsylvania 6-5000 Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Brown Derby Jump Cherry Poppin' Daddies - No Mercy For Swine Colin James - C'mon With the C'mon Ditty Bops - Sister Kate Double Down - All In Flying Neutrinos - [cont.]

A. I took a class in musicality at a swing weekend. We had a live band and they played a song that started with a One Step rhythm, switched into a Charleston rhythm, then switched again into a Swing rhythm. The melody was exactly the same. The drummer played a different beat and it was swing. We immediately changed our dance steps to match the different beats. They also showed how, without a drummer, the bass carried the swing rhythm. And in absence of the bass and drummer, it was the left hand of the piano player. I hope that helps..

My wife wants me to go to a couples club called Encounters to swing. How do I tell her I hate Big Band music?
Q. Also, this club charges $25 for men and is free for women to enter which seems unfair. I've had headaches lately and the last thing I want to do is spend my Friday listening to Big Band swing music. Maybe I should let her go alone?

A. I don't have specific websites for you, but here's how you can try to find them yourself... Go to: or Just search for "dance clubs" in your area. Maybe even "swing clubs." They'll give you a listing of places and the distance from your home. They might even have a website you can check it out at. If not, they'll at least give you a phone number that you call to get more information! Good luck! :)

A. Swinging Jazz music that came out of the big band era of the 20's, 30's, and 40's is dance music. This is why people like it. It's meant to get your feet tapping, you butt out of your seat, and out onto the dance floor. The energy of the music is an embodiment of fun. The Savoy Ballroom was the home of swing music and dancing in Harlem during this era, and it became known as "the home of happy feet!" Take a look at the video clip from the movie Hellzapoppin' (1941) featuring Savoy Ballroom Dancers known as "Whitey's Lindy Hoppers": This energy is what modern swing dancers continue to try and capture! Compare the previous video to this one from 2006. This is a video from a modern lindy hop competition: The music all started… [cont.]

A. Swing is not something that is easily defined in a few sentences. To really learn how to swing you have to listen to jazz to pick up the feel of the eighth notes. In swinging rhythms, we play the eighth notes on the beat slightly longer than eighth notes off the beat. At faster tempos, the eighth notes become more and more even. You have to listen a lot to pick up the subtleties of swing rhythms. An important part of swing is also in the articulation. Keep your eighth notes legato. Also, we usually play quarter notes short and marcato. We do not play swing eighth notes like dotted eighth - sixteenths. That approach produces a very rigid rhythmic feel, and does not swing. Also, the triplet pattern only works for a narrow tempo… [cont.]

A. You should listen to "Let's face the music and dance" recorded by Sinantra and other bands. That was composed by Irving Berlin back in the days. One of the best up swing music for big band. This is a good song to play instrumentally as well, without the voice. Lots of room for improvisation.

A. What you're looking for is some more "Neo-Swing" music. A. Just search for an artist or song title. You won't be able to find every song on there, but anything that's in the public domain will be there. (Right click, save as, on the MP3 link next to song names.) Also, the sound quality may not be great on some songs, because all of the tracks on this website are recorded off of 78 speed records and have not been remastered, but most are pretty good quality. If you just want to listen to swing music, check out Yehoodi Radio: It's swing music selected by swing dancers, for swing dancers.
