A. Pandora.com - Type in a song or artist, and it will find music similar to that, and allow you to finetune the automated results, so you get a whole playlist of music you can stream anytime, of only artists and songs you like. P.S., they won't sell out your information if you register selecting to opt-out of 3rd party emails.

How do your write swing music?
Q. I have to write a piece of music for my composition class i wanted to write something with a swing feel. Only we haven't learned how to write anything but classical 4 part. We were encouraged to try different styles but i don't know where to even start.

A. I took a class in musicality at a swing weekend. We had a live band and they played a song that started with a One Step rhythm, switched into a Charleston rhythm, then switched again into a Swing rhythm. The melody was exactly the same. The drummer played a different beat and it was swing. We immediately changed our dance steps to match the different beats. They also showed how, without a drummer, the bass carried the swing rhythm. And in absence of the bass and drummer, it was the left hand of the piano player. I hope that helps..

Do you dance to the drum beat in swing music?
Q. I'm trying to learn swing dance (6-count and 8-count), but am having a hard time dancing to the beat. I can do it without music (pointless I know). Exactly what Instruments am I supposed to listen for? I thought it was the drum beat, but that seems wrong now for some reason.

A. Try listening to music without having to dance - it's easier to concentrate on the music when you're not worrying about what your feet are doing. I'm assuming that you're talking about east coast swing (which uses more 6 count patterns) and lindy hop (which uses more 8 count patterns). Here's some brief tips on musicality which should help you to learn how to listen out for the rhythm. All swing music has a 4/4 rhythm. This means that there are 4 beats to a bar. 8 count swing dance moves thus consist of 2 bars. Swing music is constructed out of groups of 32 bars or 4 dance 'moves'. Now the rhythm to a piece of swing music is provided by the rhythm section. This normally consists of drums and a bass - a piano may contribute when not… [cont.]

A. Big Band refers to the size of the band, Swing music is a style of music which a band can play. Big Bands are associated with swing music because they were most popular when swing music was most popular. I've seen big bands range from 10 members to over 20, depending on the band and the sections involved. A big band doesn't have to just play swing music. During the popular days of big bands, they were expected to play slow romantic tunes, waltzes, and Latin numbers as well. Swing music, on the other hand can be played with just a trio. Essentially swing is a fusion of traditional jazz and blues. Swing has a very staccato rhythm normally played on the bass or rhythm guitar (something like "chug, chug, chug, chug" on every count). … [cont.]

I'd recommend going to each band's website and getting on their email lists to find out when they are playing near you: The Huntsville Swing Dance Society just had the "Blue Savoy Jazz Combo" play one of their dances. You should watch their calendar to see the next time they have a band: In Birmingham, they have swing dancer every Monday night. It looks like it's just a DJ, but if band were to play in the area, then they'd probably know about it first. A. Swing music didn't really start until the 1930s, and much of the world greeted it as decadent, and morally corrupt. Hitler banned it in 1936, and much of Europe hated it. It was thought to exemplify what was wrong with America - it was loud, fast, and simple.

A. Well first off it's not really swing music. It is big band but more straight ahead jazz which is something you'd hear from the 60's on, more like the Tonight Show theme or Saturday Night Live. Listening to the song in the background, the horns almost sound synthesized, so it makes me think that the music is probably produced by a studio band, not necessarily a recording band. Definitely some kind of stock music. If you are looking for "fast swing music", then go with the great Count Basie: Jumpin' At the Woodside One O'clock Jump Every Tub Doggin' Around Shorty George Kid from Redbank Swingin' the Blues All great tunes. If you want more straight ahead jazz, then check out they Tonight Show Band. They cover a lot of swing songs,… [cont.]

A. You should listen to "Let's face the music and dance" recorded by Sinantra and other bands. That was composed by Irving Berlin back in the days. One of the best up swing music for big band. This is a good song to play instrumentally as well, without the voice. Lots of room for improvisation.
