What is that old oreo cookie commercial with the swing music?
Q. I remember, when I was younger, there was an old oreo cookie commercial that aired mmm maybe '90s to early 2000s. It had the oreo cookies dancing to some kind of swing music and that's what I want to know. What's that swing music that the cookies were dancing to?
Asked by Ariel R - Mon Oct 22 19:57:15 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. It wasn't Oreo's it was "Chips Ahoy". The song is "Sing, Sing, Sing" most commonly performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra (although the song was originally written by Louis Prima).

Do you dance to the drum beat in swing music?
Q. I'm trying to learn swing dance (6-count and 8-count), but am having a hard time dancing to the beat. I can do it without music (pointless I know). Exactly what Instruments am I supposed to listen for? I thought it was the drum beat, but that seems wrong now for some reason.

A. Try listening to music without having to dance - it's easier to concentrate on the music when you're not worrying about what your feet are doing. I'm assuming that you're talking about east coast swing (which uses more 6 count patterns) and lindy hop (which uses more 8 count patterns). Here's some brief tips on musicality which should help you to learn how to listen out for the rhythm. All swing music has a 4/4 rhythm. This means that there are 4 beats to a bar. 8 count swing dance moves thus consist of 2 bars. Swing music is constructed out of groups of 32 bars or 4 dance 'moves'. Now the rhythm to a piece of swing music is provided by the rhythm section. This normally consists of drums and a bass - a piano may contribute when not… [cont.]

Q. do big bands only play swing music?

A. Big Band refers to the size of the band, Swing music is a style of music which a band can play. Big Bands are associated with swing music because they were most popular when swing music was most popular. I've seen big bands range from 10 members to over 20, depending on the band and the sections involved. A big band doesn't have to just play swing music. During the popular days of big bands, they were expected to play slow romantic tunes, waltzes, and Latin numbers as well. Swing music, on the other hand can be played with just a trio. Essentially swing is a fusion of traditional jazz and blues. Swing has a very staccato rhythm normally played on the bass or rhythm guitar (something like "chug, chug, chug, chug" on every count). … [cont.]

A. There's actuallly quite a lot of swing/big bands that play in the Alabama area. I'd recommend going to each band's website and getting on their email lists to find out when they are playing near you: The Huntsville Swing Dance Society just had the "Blue Savoy Jazz Combo" play one of their dances. You should watch their calendar to see the next time they have a band: In Birmingham, they have swing dancer every Monday night. It looks like it's just a DJ, but if band were to play in the area, then they'd probably know about it first. Similarly, the Auburn University Swing Dance Association might be able to let you know when a band comes to your area: So I hope that helps you in your area. Outside of your area . . . A. Swing music didn't really start until the 1930s, and much of the world greeted it as decadent, and morally corrupt. Hitler banned it in 1936, and much of Europe hated it. It was thought to exemplify what was wrong with America - it was loud, fast, and simple.

A. Swing is not something that is easily defined in a few sentences. To really learn how to swing you have to listen to jazz to pick up the feel of the eighth notes. In swinging rhythms, we play the eighth notes on the beat slightly longer than eighth notes off the beat. At faster tempos, the eighth notes become more and more even. You have to listen a lot to pick up the subtleties of swing rhythms. An important part of swing is also in the articulation. Keep your eighth notes legato. Also, we usually play quarter notes short and marcato. We do not play swing eighth notes like dotted eighth - sixteenths. That approach produces a very rigid rhythmic feel, and does not swing. Also, the triplet pattern only works for a narrow tempo… [cont.]

A. What you're looking for is some more "Neo-Swing" music. That's the name for the bands and music of the swing revival that came out of the mid 1990's, with the bands embracing more of a rock n' roll rhythm with swingin' horns. A. Swing music is characterized, in part, by medium to fast tempos. Does it have to be swing, or will other styles of jazz suffice? I'll list off some of the most famous swing musicians and maybe you can do an Itunes search for what you like. All of these artists were pretty prolific, so there should be plenty to pick from. Benny Goodman Buddy Rich Glenn Miller (who definitely has some slower stuff, like Penn. 6500) Count Basie Jelly Roll Morton Adn some artists from the "Swing Revival" era: Royal Crown Review Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Cherry Poppin' Daddies Brian Setzer Orchestra Good Luck!
