Do you dance to the drum beat in swing music?
Q. I'm trying to learn swing dance (6-count and 8-count), but am having a hard time dancing to the beat. I can do it without music (pointless I know). Exactly what Instruments am I supposed to listen for? I thought it was the drum beat, but that seems wrong now for some reason.

A. Try listening to music without having to dance - it's easier to concentrate on the music when you're not worrying about what your feet are doing. I'm assuming that you're talking about east coast swing (which uses more 6 count patterns) and lindy hop (which uses more 8 count patterns). Here's some brief tips on musicality which should help you to learn how to listen out for the rhythm. All swing music has a 4/4 rhythm. This means that there are 4 beats to a bar. 8 count swing dance moves thus consist of 2 bars. Swing music is constructed out of groups of 32 bars or 4 dance 'moves'. A. Best bet is to listen to swing music...it's all in a syncopated style. It's not hard to learn on the flute..I've been playing 10+ years and enjoy swing.
