Where can I get sheet music of Stardust the way it was played by Artie Shaw?
Q. I have the regular music, but I want to play it the way he played it in his band.
Asked by Jimbo - Sat Aug 1 18:07:07 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can check this link to see if any of these arrangements are what you're looking for: It is possible that the specific arrangement that you are looking for is not in print. Since you have a version of the song, I would recommend that you purchase a recording (if you don't already own one) and learn the arrangement by listening to the recording and comparing it to the sheet music you have.

Who's better: Artie Shaw or Benny Goodman?
Q. In my opinion, Artie Shaw. Nightmare is just chilling. They're both great though.

A. Benny Goodman is one of the best jazz men ever. Particularly what he played before the big band era makes him much more significant than Artie Shaw. Listen to "That's A Plenty" and "Clarinettis" (and other early recordings) here: My pick is Benny.

What do you call good music?
Q. I'm an accused of being a music elitist, lol. I like genuine stuff. Mostly of the indie/folk persuasion. But I don't think older stuff should be forgotten about. Swing, for instance, isn't given enough credit by newer generations. Artie Shaw's my idol. I have lots of things to say about other people's tast in 'music', but usually nothing good, so that's why I usually don't discuss it, even with my friends haha. But I honestly want to know, what do you qualify as good music?

A. Patches by Dickey Lee was one of my favorites way back then. He had another hit with Laurie (Strange Things Happen) and it's a good one. Tell Laura I Love Her by Ray Peterson is really sad. Tony Bennett had a spooky one called Laura. Ode to Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry is one I know all the words to. Daniel by Elton John reminds me of my best friend's son, who died at 16. Cajun Moon by J J Cale has a haunting quality in the music and lyrics. That's all for right now.

Do you ever wish you could have been born in a different era?
Q. I would give anything to have lived in the days of big bands. It really is amazing, and I love to play swing clarinet. Artie Shaw's my idol, he was the best. How frustrating it is that I can only imagine. What era would you like to have lived in? Or rather lived than been born...lol.

A. i would say about a decade earlier than I am now (late boomer). my parents and aunts and uncles survived the Depression and World War II, twas no picnic. Artie Shaw was brilliant, I love his stuff. People forget that a diverse collection of music came out of that era. I share your love of the music. There are some big band groups playing the old stuff out and about today.

Songs like Gloomy Sunday?
Q. I'm looking for songs that are similar in sound to Gloomy Sunday (the Artie Shaw version). Help?
Asked by Mrin - Thu Jan 28 21:42:19 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are no songs as beautifully depressing as "Gloomy Sunday" . Early urban legend has the police finding it playing as they enter a room to invstigate a suicide. It was then subsequently banned from airplay.

I like sad/depressing songs. I'd like nominations for this category-?
Q. As I was trying to say - no English indie songs (no Smiths for example) but jazz or soul. First everything by Nina, but, my number 1 nomination is 'Lonely House' by Abbey Lincoln keeps me suicidal, even better than Billie Holday's (or Artie Shaw's) Gloomy Sunday

A. If - Bread If a man could be two places at one time, Id be with you. Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way. If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die, Id spend the end with you. And when the world was through, Then one by one the stars would all go out, Then you and I would simply fly away This second verse makes me cry! Boo-Hoo.. Merry Christmas to you.

summarize this in your own words?
Q. Music in the 1940s was mainly built around the jazz and big band styles that were popular during the day. Artists like Rosemary Clooney, Count Basie, and Artie Shaw helped to define the musical era with their unique brand of entertaining crowds through their music. This was also the era of World War II, and many musical acts strived to reflect the pain that the country was going through while still remaining upbeat and positive about the impending future. The 1940's was a time for many breakthrough artists who made their mark in the history of music and several of them are still recognized as innovators in their day.

Q. 2.What is the significance of the two songs, Tennessee Waltz and He ll Have to Go, with regard to the success of country music? 3. Name two song genres/types established by Tin Pan Alley writers that contributed to the early success of hillbilly music. 4. What lead instrument do honky tonk and western swing have in common? 5. Besides drums, guitar, piano, bass, and piano, what musical instrument(s) do western swing (Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys) and swing big bands (Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw) have in common? 6. Name two artists associated with traditional country music today I have absolutely no idea what these are...NEED HELP!!!

A. 1. That cannot be done "briefly." Country songs have been patriotic going back to the 30s, and numerous country performers served in the military. That would take a lot of space to detail. 2. They were two of the bigger cross-over songs in history. 4. Steel guitar 5. Saxophones and clarinets. 6. George Strait, Alan Jackson.

Need some good 1940s music?
Q. By 1940s, I don't mean swing. I already listen to Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, etc. Can anyone give me some other artists like that? More crooning than big band. And it doesn't have to be just 1940s, 1930s would be good too. I love listening to Fred Astaire and The Boswell Sisters, anything like that. I'd say 1920s as well, like Billy Murray and Annette Hanshaw, but those are a little harder to get copies of so does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it! Thank you! :)

A. go to archive.org and click on music and put in 1930s etc and they will come up with some recordings you can listen to and decide what you like. Google crooners of the 1940s and you will get a list of them.
